Gift Boxes Make Wonderful Care Packages

If you’ve got kids of a certain age, then you may have recently seen them off to college. Perhaps for the first time! And while college is a great time for young people to explore their independence and to learn and grow, they’re never too old for a little care package from mom and dad. Or from grandparents, aunts and uncles, even family friends!

One of our Goodly employees told us that when she was in college, her grandfather did something special for her: he granted her entry to an exclusive organization, something he created, called the "Keep The Wolf From The Door Foundation."

Now, that phrase saw its popularity way back in the 1920’s, and if the “wolf was at your door,” it meant you were going hungry and/or about to starve.

Here's how the "Foundation" worked: at the start of each month, her grandfather would send her a letter with a check for $20 to spend on whatever she wanted, but most likely pizza and beer, because this was not his first grandchild to go to college.

The deal was twofold: 1) she had to cash the check right away, and 2) she had to reply back with a letter of her own, letting him know what was going on in her life.

We don't expect many people send checks these days — heck, do today’s college kids even know what they are? — but a care package is still a fun and loving way to keep in touch with your favorite college or boarding school student. A way to keep the "wolf" of boredom, stress, loneliness or even hunger from the door!
